Original Air Conditioners

Long ago, before the use of electricity a doctor right here in Florida named John Gorrie figured that keeping people cool in the hospital might help with healing and reduce diseases. His original idea was to tow huge blocks of ice from frozen lakes up north and use manual fanning to keep rooms cool. Obviously, that idea was great on paper but short on the right process to make it work.

John then, (not the same John that works here now 🙂 ) created a design for a machine that made ice using horsepower, wind, and even steam power. They awarded him a patent, but as things go, his investor died. This means he never got to see his air conditioning invention created. But, that was the start of something big. We can all be thankful that a fellow Floridian thought enough of his fellow sufferers to dream of such a new idea. Where would we be without him? One wonders.

Remember When?

Remember, back in the day, most homes here in Florida did not have air conditioning. Many, were vacation homes enjoyed only during the winter by our northern friends. Houses from those time periods were often built with the front and back doors in a straight line from each other for air flow. Many techniques were used to help passively cool homes. A raised house, usually on blocks or stone, was cooler than one built right on the ground. High arched ceilings with a high window allowed the heat to rise away from the residents and outside. Floridians were quite ingenious about it.

Second Generation – Real Air Conditioning

The real generation of air conditioners were first patented and created by a name we still know today, Carrier. Many of the first patents and designs were pioneered by him and his team of engineers. Current Generation Air Conditioning

Leap forward to today, and you find modern AC units made with amazing efficiencies and weather resistant materials. Moreover, the entire system including the thermostat, condenser, air handler, blower, evaporator, and all the bits and parts in between, are more efficient now than 5 years ago. Refrigerants are also less damaging to the environment than those of a few years ago.

Newer thermostats can combine with zone controls to give the property owner the ultimate control in hot and cold zones and the budget. Power is not getting any cheaper and we need to be ready. Even filters, and their efficiencies, come into play when considering how to reduce costs and maintain the systems at their peak performance.

Fast Forward

Sitting here, in my air conditioned office, I can’t imagine going through the pain of one of those early 1900s . That heat, and those mosquitoes. Thankfully, we have great shelters and better AC units. Unfortunately, the weather is fighting us more every day. The days are hotter each year. And, storms are a regular occurrence now when they used to be rare.
